“There were certain things regarding cybersecurity I just assumed my staff would know about. It turns out I was wrong.” This is what a senior manager said to me recently during a meeting. A member of staff had been caught out by a phishing email. There were plenty of warning signs that the email was a scam, however on this occasion the recipient missed all of them. Why was that?
In my experience it’s a belief that it’s too complicated, it costs too much money or it’s something that they do not need to worry about. Unfortunately, when people have those beliefs, it can be very difficult to get them to change their mind.
I recently spoke to a colleague who wondered how easy it would be to plug some cables in to a smart device for the oilfield and extract the data from it, without the client being aware. This is of course eminently possible, but it doesn’t really point the gun of risk mitigation where it should be.
